Success at World University Games again, Ruth makes it two.
Ruth Rowe from our South Australian branch Club, Total Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan has won a Bronze Medal at the World University Championships. Our congratulations to Ruth and her Instructor 2000 Olympian Cynthia Cameron 5th Dan Black Belt. The Only other Taekwondo medal won at World University Games prior to Ruth’s win was by another Oh Do Kwan member, Kavita Kumar (pictured below on the podium in 2003) from our Maddington branch. Unfortunately we presently have no picture from the event of Ruth.
Following is excerpts of a news item on Ruth’s win taken from the Australian University sports website.
Friday, August 10, 2007 - By Jodie Taylor
Ruth fights her way to Bronze
It has taken only one day for Australia to be on the medal podium. Ruth Rowe from Flinders University claimed the heavy weight (over 72kg) bronze medal in Taekwondo at Thammasat University during the 24th Summer Univerisade 8th – 18th August, in Bangkok Thailand.
With fifteen medals on offer on the first official day of competition Australia took home two, with Sarah Katsolius capping off the night with silver in the 50m women’s Breastroke.
The performance from the Australian Team was remarkable. With over seventy percent of the Australian Team in competition mode, personal bests were no problems when it came to the pool, track, court, range and mats.
Australian has only won one previously medal in Taekwondo, Kavita Kumar (fin weight) in 2003. Australian Team Assistant Chef de Mission, Mr James Finlayson, said the bronze medal has inspired the team, and the team is looking forward to many more medals to come.
“At the 2003 games in Daegu the Australian Team took home their biggest medal tally of 11, which included 2 gold medals on the track. The potential of the 2007 Australian Team is far beyond the success of that event” said Finlayson

7th INTERNATIONAL CLUBS TAEKWONDO CHAMPIONSHIPS

(Australia Vs Malaysia)
The 28th
& 29th July saw Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan hosting the 7th
International Clubs Taekwondo Championships in Perth Western Australia, with the
assistance and support of Taekwondo Western Australia Inc. The two day competition saw
over 250 black belt competitors from England, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Holland, Mauritius,
Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia competing for
honours.

(Mauritius Vs England)
In Many
divisions competition was close, with winners being decided by sudden death. The
refereeing at the event was applauded by all with minimal decisions questioned. All at Oh Do Kwan thank the referees and
volunteers who made the two days of competition such a smooth event.

(Western Australia Vs Victoria)
Our Oh
Do Kwan team made up of clubs from Perth, Bunbury and Kalgoorlie, supported by coaches
Ross Hartnett, Carmela Hartnett, Anita Tippet, Justin Warren, Graeme Hartnett, Stephen
Russell, David Elphick, Andrew Duddy and Melissa Warren, were successful in winning both
Minor Divisions and the Junior Division team trophies. The Oh Do Kwan team also took out 2nd
place overall in the senior divisions, the combined success in these divisions, ensured Oh
Do Kwan won the overall team trophy.

(Oh Do Kwan Coach Graeme Hartnett picks up the Overall team
trophy on behalf of Oh Do Kwan)
Oh Do
Kwan head instructor Carmela Hartnett 7th Dan and current national team member,
dispatched opponents from England, Singapore, Australia and Malaysia to take out the Gold
medal in the Open Female Poomsae division, continuing her winning run in international
poomsae competition, while Ben Henry defeated
a large field to take out Gold in the minor 2 male division. Catherine Dawson also had
excellent success in the Poomsae division coming 1st in a field of 14 including
competitors from England, Malaysia, Singapore, Victoria and South Australia. Our poomsae
competitors contributed greatly to Oh Do Kwan winning team trophies in each of the overall
age categories. Between them our poomsae competitors won 5 Gold, 4 Silver and 15 Bronze
medals, well done!

(ODK Coach Carmela
Hartnett picks up 2nd Place Open team trophy on behalf of Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan)
Julie
and Catherine Dawson had three bouts each in the Female Junior Flyweight division to meet
in the finals, on the way defeating athletes from Malaysia and Singapore, with Julie
clinching the Gold by a single point in the finals against sister Catherine.

(Australia Vs Singapore)
Chad
Cross from Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan was unlucky to lose against Thomas Power from Tans
Taekwondo Queensland in the final of Male welter weight, having won the junior division
the day before Chad found himself again in the finals against Thomas, who had dispatched Chads
club mate Andrew McLagen and Lim Toh Huei from Malaysia in earlier rounds. At the end of
three rounds the score was locked at eight all and went to sudden death, with both players
kicking simultaneously and hitting, Thomas had the more clean impact which got him the
judges point and a well deserved win.

(ODK Coach Anita Tippett picks up 1st Place Minor 2
Category team trophy for ODK, while ODK SA affiliate instructor Cynthia Cameron picks up 2nd
Place team trophy in the same division on behalf of Total ODK, South Australia)
10 year

his young age and physical frame, winning three bouts including a 7 point stoppage against
Singapore on his way to winning the finals of the under 34kg class against Mitchell Aarons
of Melbourne Taekwondo Centre.

(ODK Coach Graeme
